Here are Mazda problems that I think you should know. I’m speaking from experience because we currently manage 19 Mazdas in our fleet.
Mazdas are beautiful, comfortable, fuel-efficient and very enjoyable to drive, but there are a few recurring issues we have noticed:
1. The famous “quack” sound
Some Mazdas develop a creaking or quacking sound, especially when going over bumps, turning or braking. It is often linked to worn bushes, stabilizer links, shock mounts, control arms or ball joints.
2. Suspension wears faster on rough roads
Mazdas handle very well, but Kenyan roads can be unforgiving. Bushes, links, shocks and lower arms may require more frequent attention, especially on vehicles driven daily.
3. Poor-quality brake pads become noisy
Cheap brake pads can cause squeaking, grinding, excessive brake dust and even damage the discs. With Mazdas, using quality brake pads makes a big difference.
4. The paint can peel or fade faster
Some Mazda colours, especially red, appear to be more sensitive to direct sunlight, harsh washing chemicals and poor-quality repainting. You may notice fading, peeling clear coat or stone chips earlier than expected.
5. Low ground clearance
Models such as the Demio, Axela and Atenza can easily scrape speed bumps, stones and rough roads. The engine cover and stone guard underneath can also become loose and start producing strange noises.
6. Diesel Mazdas need proper care
Diesel CX-5s and Atenzas should not be treated like ordinary petrol cars. Wrong engine oil, short trips, delayed servicing and ignoring warning lights can lead to DPF, turbo and injector problems.
7. Engine mounting problems
Worn engine mounts may cause vibration when idling, engaging drive or accelerating. Sometimes people assume it is an engine or gearbox problem when it is simply a damaged mount.
8. Wheel bearings and suspension noises
A humming sound that increases with speed may come from a wheel bearing, while knocking sounds usually point to suspension or steering components.
9. Infotainment screen problems
Some Mazda screens experience ghost touching, freezing or random selections. This can become very irritating, especially when driving.
10. Battery issues can trigger several warning lights
A weak battery may cause multiple dashboard warnings and make the car appear to have serious electrical problems. Always test the battery before panicking.
11. Automatic gearbox maintenance is often ignored
Some owners believe gearbox oil should never be changed. Using the wrong fluid or delaying maintenance can lead to jerking, delayed engagement and expensive repairs.
12. Low-profile tyres and rims suffer easily
Mazdas look great with larger rims, but potholes can damage rims, tyres, wheel alignment and suspension parts faster.
Despite these issues, Mazdas remain some of the best-looking and most enjoyable cars to drive. The secret is simple: use quality parts, service them properly and never ignore unfamiliar sounds.
A small “quack” today can become a full suspension bill tomorrow.
