Long Island man has become the first person in New York state to be cured of sickle cell anemia.

For 21 years, Sebastien Beauzile lived with the constant pain and complications of sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder in which misshapen red blood cells clog blood vessels and cause severe pain, fatigue and organ damage.

But at Cohen Children’s Medical Center on Long Island, he received a cutting-edge gene therapy that doctors say has effectively cured his condition.

The treatment, called Lyfgenia (generic name lovotibeglogene autotemcel), works by collecting a patient’s own bone marrow stem cells and genetically modifying them in a lab so they produce healthy red blood cells instead of sickled ones. After high-dose chemotherapy to clear out the old bone marrow, the modified cells are infused back into the body.

Once the new cells start making normal hemoglobin, the blood flows more freely and the painful blockages that define the disease can stop. In Beauzile’s case, doctors report the chronic pain and frequent complications he suffered for years have vanished.

Sickle cell disease was first described more than a century ago and affects people of African, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent most commonly. Traditional treatments have managed symptoms but not cured the disease. Lyfgenia represents one of the first FDA-approved gene therapies aimed at addressing the genetic root of sickle cell by enabling the body to produce healthy red blood cells.
