I travelled through Great Nicobar today.

These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow.

The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs.

The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away.

This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language.

So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime.

It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.

The corruption and bribery charges against the NAAC inspection team are not surprising. Most Universities knew how to get at A++ NAAC. What shocked me was the involvement of the Visitor’s nominee in the scandal. The nominee of the president of India was the chief architect and the fixer in chief!!

Rajeev Sijariya was a Professor at JNU. He was appointed in various positions at IIT, AICTE, BHU etc. by the President of India. He served as the Member ‘Co-ordinator’ of the NAAC inspection committee for KLEF scandal. As a key person responsible for preparing the final inspection report, he had direct influence over the accreditation outcome.

He demanded 1.8 Crores as bribe of which Rs.30 Lacs was for other members and 1.5 Crores for himself. He appointed the members, wrote the report, coordinated the scores of other
Members, and even showed the final draft of the report to the university and received the bribes. Each of the member of the inspection team were selected for their lack of integrity. Each was paid in an envelope. Each wrote and scored as they were told. His Son, Falit Sijariya was actively involved in the discussions regarding the bribery

And all this was coordinated by a JNU Professor who was a nominee of the President of India!!
