Like mentioned in lecture, advertising is much more visual than PR. I know for myself, if an item’s packaging is attractive to me and matches my personality/aesthetic, I’m much more inclined to buy it. Can anyone relate? #UWJ201 #321
@camilatrimbrgr I believe that when a company messes up in terms of their brand image it’s really hard for them to recover. Cancel culture is a huge trend right now, especially if an issue becomes viral. The company then has to be very careful when apologizing. #UWJ201 #321
@t8anderson99 I think it both is and isn’t invasive of a user’s privacy. Many users don’t realize how often they put in their email, phone number, name, etc. into the internet. At the same time, I believe there’s a limit to how much access advertisers should have to personal info. #UWJ201 #321
In Monday’s lecture we discussed persuasion vs. manipulation. This led to me think about brands and how concerned they really are regarding their consumer’s needs. What are some examples of brands who you believe truly cater to their customers wants and demands? #UWJ201 #321
@kouri_sophia I feel as if it depends on the consumer and their levels of awareness. If an individual knows their information is being taken to curate ads for them they may be less likely to participate whereas less informed consumers are more vulnerable. #UWJ201 #321
@alex_anagno@davalos This may be the product of human behavior. When we are overloaded with information we do not wish to take more time to analyze it all. Therefore the peripheral route seems easier and more convenient, especially if we have pre-existing attitudes towards the issue. #UWJ201 #321
Horizontal and vertical integration reminded me of the term gatekeeping. Gate keepers decide what information is produced and put out to the public. When only a handful of corporations are in charge of the majority of outlets, how does this affect gatekeeping? #UWJ201 #321
@alinapietr I also find this to be crazy! It makes you wonder what other companies & brands that we know and use daily are owned by bigger corporations. Also how that effects the type of service or content that we are receiving as consumers. #UWJ201 #321
@ecwalsh5 @prowag I think that the biggest problem with our news being faced around economics is that it forced society to be more concerned about profit rather than issues of equality and opportunities for all. Also distracts us raising awareness towards important issues. #UWJ201 #321
Earlier this week we discussed media bias and how it’s important to not label stories as exclusive. My dad watches the Indian news a lot and this discussion reminded me of how often they are using the term “breaking news”. International news is quite different. #UWJ201 #321
@jonny_lipman I’m in total agreement with you. It’s also really interesting seeing the different political viewpoints individuals have based on their backgrounds for example gender, race, socioeconomic status, etc. #UWJ201 #321
@RethmanJenna This is a great thought. While we were discussing this point in class I had the same reaction. I never read those things! It’s crazy how many times we’re required to agree to the terms and agreements but never truly know what we are agreeing to #UWJ201 #321
@EddieEngelman This is an interesting question because our assignment was specific to controversial issues. Though I wonder how our bias affects us with other types of information. Such as what we see on social media or news around the entertainment industry #UWJ201 #321
@ASaladucha I also believe that the patrol method is better. It allows outlets to go deeper into the story over a longer period of time. It gives more value to the story and gives viewers a better understand of why it may be important #UWJ201 #321
While doing my short writing assignment this week I was surprised with how the hostile media effect affected me. I realized that due to the stereotypes towards certain news outlets, I look at and interpret news differently. I show bias. Did anyone else notice this? #UWJ201 #321
@AlexParizek I feel that if news networks were to do this people in higher positions would disapprove. Many politicians benefit off the fact that individuals from a lower socioeconomic status do not have equal access to specific sources & this would be a major threat to them. #UWJ201 #321
@MutzMadelyn I feel like it depends on what type of media we’re discussing. It might be that the lack of one type of media results in the use of another. It’s important to understand how individual forms of media effect individuals and their knowledge of the news. #UWJ201 #321
The lecture about framing reminded me of how large news outlets portrayed the BLM protests. Many of the peaceful protests were shown as violent when that was not the case for the majority of the protests. What was the message they were attempting to send to viewers? #UWJ201 #321
