From Ayush Malik to ‘Mohammad Ali’? Inside the Shamli conversion case

How did a Hindu pharmaceutical trader's son become "Mohammad Ali"?

According to the FIR filed by businessman Devraj Malik, his son Ayush Malik first met gym trainer Chandni Qureshi at Qureshi Plus Gym nearly five years ago. The relationship deepened over time, after which Ayush was introduced to Chandni's family and religious circles.

Devraj alleges that a secret nikah was conducted around four years ago and that Ayush was gradually drawn away from his Hindu identity. Family members claim he began growing a beard, wearing a skullcap, visiting mosques, listening to Islamic sermons, and eventually started identifying as "Mohammad Ali."

During the investigation, Shamli Police revealed that Ayush was introduced to YouTube lectures of Pakistani cleric Dr Israr by Chandni Qureshi and regularly listened to them.

Ten individuals have been named, including Chandni Qureshi, Rahil Qureshi, Sumaila Qureshi, Raabia Qureshi, Aas Mohammad, Huma Qureshi, Islam Qureshi, Saleem, Munavvar Maulvi and others.

Devraj alleges that family members and clerics worked together to facilitate the conversion process, prepare a nikahnama, exert pressure on Ayush and his family, and influence him to permanently embrace Islam.

So far, Chandni Qureshi and her father Islam Qureshi have been arrested. Shamli SP Narendra Pratap Singh has confirmed that an SIT and LIU teams have been constituted to investigate the matter, including the role of clerics, digital influence, financial transactions and the wider network mentioned in the complaint.

What began as a gym friendship has now become one of the cases of grooming jihad.

T-1298: UPSC Prelims 2026 was as challenging or even more challenging than 2023 Prelims given the type of questions asked including 40 questions of 3-statements nature as good as how many of the above (2023 had 39 such questions), length of questions, nature of questions including anything under the Sun (20 questions) and subjects covered or not covered (polity + geography = 10 questions whereas AMAC + IR = 27).
