NCUI organised a webinar on “Women Leadership in Cooperatives: Breaking Barriers” on August 12, 2025, aligning with SDG 5 – Gender Equality, which calls for ensuring women’s full participation and leadership in all spheres. In his opening remarks, Dr. Sudhir Mahajan, Chief Executive, NCUI, underscored that cooperatives, founded on principles of democracy, equity, and solidarity, are natural platforms for advancing gender equality, yet persistent barriers must be overcome to build stronger cooperatives and communities. He reaffirmed NCUI’s commitment to women’s empowerment through training, exposure visits, and leadership programmes that equip women with skills, confidence, and networks to lead. The session, moderated by Ms. Sandhya Kapoor, featured insights from VIMOSEWA on cooperative insurance for domestic workers, Looms of Ladakh on transforming traditional weaving into sustainable livelihoods, and ICA Asia-Pacific on global best practices. Discussions stressed capacity building, networking, and policy support as key drivers for strengthening women-led cooperatives.
