โAn upper caste man could not have defiled himself by raping a lower caste woman.โ
The trial court said this while acquitting the accused.
In 1992, Bhanwari Devi tried to stop a child marriage. She was then gang-raped.
Her case led to Vishaka guidelines& POSH act, 2013.
I left Anthropic's safety team two weeks ago. Now feels like a good moment to explain why.
AI companies are racing to build machines that are much smarter than any human, and we may not survive this. I want to work from the outside to ensure the public is informed about these risks, and help the world navigate this transition responsibly.
Right now, AI companies are underinvesting in safety. A company could undergo an intelligence explosion, or lose control of its systems, without the public ever knowing. We only found out about the HuggingFace incident because the agents broke out onto the public internet.
I donโt think thatโs acceptable for a technology that might cause extinction-level risks. The public should demand far more transparency. We canโt steer this technology safely without more people being able to see where itโs going.
Some of this is basic: companies should disclose their progress towards recursive self-improvement, report safety incidents and near-misses, meet minimum safety standards, and get independent guarantees that they are meeting those standards.
Iโll be joining @METR_Evals to do independent evaluations of these risks. I want to show the world that these guardrails are possible, and that by doing them we can move these companiesโ incentives away from racing and towards responsible development.
I wrote up more thoughts here on my decision and what I hope changes: https://t.co/doX17mrHYq

๐๐ฑ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐ are at the heart of batteries, hydrogen technologies, semiconductors, sensors, photovoltaics and many other areas that will shape our future. India needs to develop its own capabilities in these areas. We cannot remain dependent on imported materials and technologies.
The AMRIT Center will work on both research and translation. The idea is not merely to publish papers, but to create intellectual property, work closely with industry and take promising technologies from the laboratory to the market. It will also train a new generation of researchers in this important field.

He previously served as president of Perot Systems and Dell Services. Jain is also chairman emeritus of the North Texas Food Bank and a co-founder of Get Shift Done.
What makes this contribution special is the ambition behind it. He wants ๐๐๐ง๐ฆ ๐ฃ๐ถ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ to build a globally recognised centre that can contribute to Indiaโs technological capabilities.
Thank you, Mr. Jain, for believing in BITS Pilani and for giving back with such vision. Contributions such as these can transform institutions and create opportunities for generations of students and researchers.

The Houthis just struck Saudi Arabia's key oil pipeline.
Mainstream media is silent, but NASA satellite images are clear.
And 7% of the world's oil supply goes through that pipe.

As a BTech CSE student, been stuck on these exact questions for past few days.
Really loved hearing @prathoshap talk about it so openly. No easy answers, but these are conversations we need.
Dr. Pratosh at IISc Bengaluru tells his students that rapid advances in AI are commoditizing intellectual labour.
He raises an unsettling question: if companies stop recruiting on campus in the next 5โ10 yearsโeven at Indiaโs top universitiesโwhat will the purpose of a university education be ?
A must watch video for everyone in tech
Computer Science was smuggled into India.
In 1963, IIT Kanpurโs IBM 1620 arrived by military plane got hauled onto campus on a bullock cart.
By 1965, @IITKanpur launched its compulsory programming course, TA 306, for all branches.
Why TA? It stands for Technical Arts. Back then, nobody called a computer a science. It sat in the same category as carpentry and workshop trades.
When the education ministry repeatedly rejected forming a CS department for being too vocational, Prof. V. Rajaraman took matters into his own hands.
In 1978, he quietly stole 2 to 3 seats from other departments to assemble an unauthorized 20-student CS batch. He taught them using โน5 textbooks he self-printed in the campus shop.
That illegal batch closed at JEE Rank 40, forcing every other IIT to copy the program.
One student in that cohort was Rajeev Motwani, who later went to Stanford and mentored Larry Page and Sergey Brin as they built @Google
Indiaโs $200B+ IT industry wasn't created by government policy. It was an unauthorized inside job

BREAKING: OpenAI might have stolen another major proof.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAI may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gรกbor Kun were working on Gromovโs soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAI later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself.
And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpรถge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
AI is not discovering new mathematics.
AI is stealing human discovery.
Archives | A joint investigation by the German publication Sรผddeutsche Zeitung and the Venezuelan media outlet Armando Info has revealed that Vantara, owned by Anant Ambani, the youngest son of the Reliance chairperson, Mukesh Ambani, has received at least thirty-nine thousand wild animals from over thirty countries since 2022. Several of the imported animals in Vantara actually belong to species that are subject to an international trade ban, under the CITES. The report notes that Vantara has been under international scrutiny for bypassing restrictions under the CITES, possibly with cover from the Indian government.

Roughly eight F-15s suffered light damage and one A-10 was severely damaged, losing a wing.
Baraats (wedding processions) by Dalits and members of Other Backward Castes have been routinely subjected to violence by upper castes. However, Uttar Pradesh saw several such incidents this year, many involving Thakurs. Though the community has been behind several violent attacks across the state, it has faced few consequences owing, in no small part, to the fact that the stateโs chief minister, Ajay Bisht, known commonly as Adityanath, is a Thakur.
The Caravan visited Meerut to find out about two such cases that occurred earlier this year. Watch here: https://t.co/MWyxbUae5L

@Anoopnautiyal1 SMOKE SCREEN of โgrowth driverโ: This is the GAME OF RESOURCES. Wherever there are resources big โmafiasโ become active. This is not new.
My reading of the situation in #Uttarakhand tells me that five star hotels, resorts and tourism are being seen as the biggest growth driver across the state. Many pointers like the govt's real estate asset monetisation and infrastructure development are indicating this direction to me.
While one may argue that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this approach, I am not seeing the corresponding focus on developing a grassroots led decentralised social and economic system rooted around healthcare, education, agric/horticulture, migration reduction and the like.
This model is akin to developing "gated communities" that are suited for the well heeled, higher end customers; suitable for an aspirational high GDP centric model but perhaps ignoring the interests of large numbers of people who are ill equipped or lack the resources to partake in this model of development. How this shapes up and what impact this will have on millions remains to be seen in the coming years!
