Arsenal have been handed a demanding set of fixtures in the 2026/27 Champions League league phase after Thursday’s draw in Monaco.

Mikel Arteta’s side, last season’s runners-up after losing the final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, will host 15-time winners Real Madrid at the Emirates. They also welcome Borussia Dortmund, Lille and Azerbaijani debutants Sabah. Away from home they travel to Bayern Munich, Napoli, Real Betis and Slavia Prague.

The eight-match league phase begins on 8–10 September 2026 and finishes on 27 January 2027. The top eight teams go straight into the last 16; sides finishing 9th–24th enter a two-legged play-off.

Exact dates and kick-off times will be confirmed shortly. Arsenal finished top of last season’s league phase with a perfect record before reaching the final.

Tracing the deadly path of the Nepal-Tibet flash flood

A glacial collapse high in the Himalayas triggered a catastrophic flash flood and debris surge along the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August 2026, destroying towns, sweeping away bridges and roads, and leaving hundreds dead with many more missing.

The torrent of water, ice, rock and mud tore through river valleys including the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli systems. Entire settlements were inundated, hydropower sites damaged, and key crossings linking Nepal and Tibet washed out. Rescue operations continue on both sides of the border amid difficult terrain and fears of further flooding from newly formed lakes.

Nepali authorities have reported at least 469 deaths and around 910 people missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists and pilgrims from dozens of countries. Chinese officials have confirmed three deaths and more than 550 missing in Tibet’s Gyirong area. Figures from the two sides may overlap, and the toll is expected to rise.

BBC Verify mapped the flood’s path using geolocated videos and satellite imagery. The analysis shows how a sudden surge high in the mountains rapidly gained volume and speed as it descended, engulfing buildings, vehicles and infrastructure downstream. Merlyn Thomas reports.
