"Beauty in Black” star Xavier Smalls says his Christian faith—not fame—defines success. “My faith is everything,” he told Disrupshion Magazine. Worldly success, he said, is status, money, and headlines. God’s success is different: dying to yourself, serving others, and living with kindness and love.

Smalls is on his fourth reading of the Bible. Familiar passages keep revealing new meaning. “God talks to you in different ways depending on where you’re at in your life,” he said. That conviction is shaping his work behind the camera. After a dream he believes was a call from God to direct, he is developing *Symmetry*, a modern retelling of Cain and Abel about envy, identity, and belonging.

He still wants to act and tell stories. He no longer wants the next role to be the foundation of who he is.
