So it was a nice balance between being made for people who are fans of the franchise and palatable to the masses who recognize Mario and just want to watch an animated movie with their kids lol

Not really a movie buff so I can't tell you much in the way of how it compares to other films, but I was happy to see there were less corny hollywood quips that made me roll my eyes, and it wasn't full of random pop songs that feel out of place in the film (none at all actually)

Very fun movie. Lots of little tidbit references that got my attention from motifs in the score to little sound effects and the settings/levels they chose for scenes. This definitely is fun for people who've played a bunch of mario games growing up.
