On this photo is a woman who escaped Soviet Union in 1961. She crossed the border between Eastern and Western Berlin. She is on her knees, crying and rejoicing that she was able to cross the line from the darkness into the light.
This is very symbolic for us today. We need to choose which side we are on. Most people supporting Ukraine have already made that choice. But there are still others who are trying to keep one foot on either side. They are saying that “they don’t get involved in politics” and that “they are neutral.”
I, personally, have no respect for such people. How can you be neutral when russians are killing civilians, raping women, castrating men, and put it bluntly - committing genocide against Ukrainian people. People who claim neutrality are silent supporters of evil. For such people, I want to remind them the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
