quick biology lesson. mucus, sipon and plema are not exactly the same thing.

mucus is the general term. it’s a core part of our innate immune system (innate means natural or inborn), constantly produced by specialized cells called “goblet cells” and mucus glands that line the respiratory tract. it’s a natural trap for dust, allergens, bacteria and viruses before they can reach deeper into our airways. so when we have an infection, the human body produces more mucus and it becomes thicker (but our body continuously produces mucus ha, not just before harmful substances enter)

also, phlegm (plema) is mucus, BUT not all mucus is phlegm. phlegm refers to mucus from the lungs and bronchi, more noticeable during inflammation, infection or irritation because the airways produce more mucus. nasal mucus is what we call “sipon”. if y’all start with a chesty cough then later develop a runny nose, that doesn’t mean the phlegm went up. it’s the same infection spreading and affecting different parts of respiratory tract (respiratory two main sections: the upper respiratory tract or URT; the lower respiratory tract or LRT)

basically, mucus is there to protect. but if dealing with persistent or excessive buildup, it can be a sign that the human body is responding to an infection, inflammation or any underlying condition.

mucus = general term
sipon = nasal mucus
plema/phlegm = mucus from the lower respiratory tract.
