For better or worse, Filipinos have earned a reputation for being among the world’s most creative namers. We combine parents’ names, borrow from pop culture, invent spellings that seem to defy the alphabet, and occasionally turn food, technology, or current events into legal first names.

Sometimes the results are charming. Sometimes they’re unforgettable. Sometimes they’re both.

But behind every unusual name is a child who will eventually become an adult—one who must introduce themselves at job interviews, sign legal documents, answer classroom roll calls, and explain their name to strangers for decades.

That’s why naming a child is one of the most important decisions parents make.

A name is more than a label. It becomes part of a person’s identity. Studies have shown that names influence first impressions, while psychologists note that they can affect how people see themselves and how others perceive them. Fair or unfair, names carry baggage. They can project confidence, professionalism, creativity, heritage, or, in some cases, invite endless questions and jokes.

So before getting carried away by a clever idea, parents may want to consider a few dos and don’ts.

DO: THINK OF THE ADULT, NOT THE BABY

A name may sound cute on a newborn. But can you imagine it on a lawyer’s business card, a doctor’s clinic sign, or a company CEO’s office door?

Your child will spend far more years as an adult than as a baby.

DO: CHOOSE MEANING OVER NOVELTY

The best names often carry stories, values, or family significance. Meaning tends to age much better than trends.

DO: TEST THE NAME

Say the full name out loud. Check the initials. Consider possible nicknames. What sounds clever to parents may sound very different in a noisy classroom.

DO: CONSIDER HOW EASY IT IS TO SPELL AND PRONOUNCE

A unique name is fine. A name that requires a five-minute explanation every time someone reads it is another matter. Your child will thank you if teachers, employers, and government offices can spell it correctly on the first try.

DON’T: FORCE UNIQUENESS

A unique name does not require extra Y’s, silent letters, or spellings that nobody can pronounce. Your child shouldn’t spend a lifetime correcting forms and introducing themselves twice.

DON’T: NAME YOUR CHILD AFTER A TREND

Today’s viral celebrity, television series, K-pop idol, or internet meme may be forgotten in a few years. Your child’s name will likely outlive them all.

DON’T: FORGET TO CHECK THE INITIALS

Parents have accidentally created initials that spell embarrassing words or awkward combinations. It takes only a few seconds to check, but it can save years of teasing.

DON’T: MAKE IT ABOUT YOURSELF

Parents have the right to choose a name, but they should remember that they won’t be the ones carrying it every day. The name belongs to the child.

In the end, the goal isn’t to create the most unique name in the room. It’s to give your child a name that they can carry with pride.

After all, the first thing most people will ever know about your child is the name you chose for them.
