I joined exa a year ago, it's been so much fun evolving our design as the company grows
We've barely even scratched the surface though, really excited for everything to start taking off ;)
Early explorations from when I first joined!
Extremely excited to be working with @h3qing's data team at Scale to automate ~1,900 data requests last week (and growing)
And they did this w/o hiring a single new person. Find out how in thread
It's 9:37am. You open Slack. 43 unread messages. 12 are from your CEO who was "just thinking" at 2am. One of them is a complete product pivot described in three incomplete sentences.
You have 4 tickets in the sprint. None of them match what the CEO messaged about. You do the CEO thing anyway. The tickets will roll over. They always roll over.
You push a PR. The only other engineer is on PTO. You approve your own PR. You merge your own PR. You deploy your own PR.
Standup is at 11. It's you, the CEO, and a designer who started Monday. The CEO says "we need to ship this by Friday." It's Wednesday. "This" has no spec. The designer asks what the requirements are. The CEO says "you're the designer, you tell me."
Noon. A customer found a bug. The CEO Slacks you directly. "URGENT." The bug is a tooltip that says "Untitled" instead of their company name. You fix it in 4 minutes. The CEO posts in #wins that the team "crushed a critical customer escalation."
2:45pm. You're finally coding. You get into flow. 14 minutes later the CEO pulls you into a "quick call" with a prospect. You're now doing a live demo of a feature that doesn't exist yet. "It's on our roadmap," you say. You are the roadmap.
The designer sends you mockups at 4pm. There are 11 screens. They use a font you don't have. The dropdowns have animations that will take longer than the actual feature. You implement 60% of the design and call it "v1."
7:34pm. You push to prod. Something breaks. It's not your code. It's a dependency that auto-updated. You pin the version. You redeploy. You update the on-call doc. You are the on-call doc.
You check your equity calculator before bed. At the last valuation, your shares are worth $240k. Pre-tax. Pre-dilution. Pre-assuming the company exists in 4 years.
A recruiter DMs you on LinkedIn. "Exciting Series A, first 10 hires, huge equity upside." You are already living this. You close the app.
You'll do it again tomorrow. Being a software engineer at a startup is paradise.
@andruyeung i love Empower & they also come way faster than Lyfts or Ubers a lot of times
for the location issue, just type in your actual location versus using the location its auto filled with
