I keep seeing people complain that Tata exports most of Kenyaβs soda ash to India because Tata is an Indian company.
But letβs ask a more important question: Who in Kenya has actually approached Tata Chemicals Magadi to buy soda ash for manufacturing and been refused?
The argument shouldnβt be βTata exports to India, therefore Tata is exploiting Kenya.β
Soda ash is an industrial input. If a Kenyan company wants to manufacture glass, detergents, sodium silicate or other products, the relevant question is whether it can commercially obtain the soda ash it needs.
And there is another irony here: some of the companies already manufacturing glass and glass products in Kenya are themselves Indian-owned. They are already participating in the manufacturing economy.
So if we want more manufacturing in Kenya, letβs identify the investors who want to manufacture, establish what inputs they need, and ask what is actually stopping them.
If you want a company that manufactures glass, detergents, chemicals and numerous other industrial products, set up your own.
Mine is to mine soda ash. I will sell you the soda ash.
You cannot change my business model from mining to manufacturing and then accuse me of failing because I didnβt build every industry that uses my product.
If you want value addition, attract and incentivise manufacturers to buy the raw material locally.
A miner mines. A manufacturer manufactures.
The individual in the adjacent office is pursuing a distinct path from a unique starting point. It would be beneficial to challenge the person you were yesterday, as that is the most genuine competitor you will ever encounter.
