At my former job in Naija, during Ileya celebrations, I usually brought Ileya meat for my colleagues. In fact, I went as far as taking food to the office for those who had to work during the holidays, and to be honest, they always look forward to it.

One Ileya, I shared meat with my colleagues, and one of them (whom I thought we were close) took the meat and threw it straight into the dustbin the moment I turned my back. I actually went back to the dustbin and opened it just to confirm that it was the same meat I had given her.

On my next birthday, I bought food, cakes and drinks to share with everyone, but I intentionally didn’t give her any. I specifically announced on the floor that none of my food, cakes or drinks should be given to her.

From that day until she left the department, I never spoke to her, never collected anything from her, and never had anything to do with her. I also blocked her on Instagram and Facebook.

Some people will call it petty. I call it matching energy and protecting my peace 😌

I have seen a trend on TikTok where parents are saying when they realized they lost their connection with their children. The stories there are heart breaking 😭😭😭😭 . There is one that I found particulary sad , it says a man went to pay school fees and found children leaving for a school trip . He was surprised because his son never mentioned anything about that school trip , he found him in the class room alone reading a book . The son said he knew he would have said no and didn't bother.
Another one always thought his daughter was a quite girl , he took her to his sisters over the holidays and told her as much. When it was time to go pick her up ,he could hear her from the gate laughing and talking . Turns out it years of telling her to shut up had made her quite. Her sisters husband was more laid back and never complained when the children played around him . After a few days of being quiet she learnt it was safe to talk and play around the house.
