Notorious Khayelitsha gang leader Yanga "Bara" Nyalara killed in police shootout

Yanga "Bara" Nyalara, a notorious figure from Khayelitsha with alleged ties to gang violence, extortion, and multiple murders, was reportedly killed in a police shootout in the Eastern Cape on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

The confrontation took place near Butterworth (Gcuwa) after authorities were alerted to two vehicles suspected of carrying firearms.

Reports indicate that seven suspects, including Nyalara, were fatally shot during the encounter.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.

Nyalara was a feared figure in Khayelitsha, linked to various violent crimes, including a 2021 mass shooting that left 12 people dead.

He was acquitted of those charges in August 2024 due to unreliable witness testimony, and robbery charges against him were dropped in November 2024 after witnesses, allegedly fearing for their safety, refused to testify.

His death marks the end of a significant criminal presence in the area, though authorities continue to probe the details surrounding the shootout as of today, February 21, 2025.
