I get where you’re coming from. A lot of people talk about Mining Indaba like it’s for “the industry,” but in reality it mostly serves executives, investors, policymakers, and deal-makers. For the ordinary miner underground or on site, it barely moves the needle.

Hosting it in a mining town sounds right in principle, closer to the people, closer to the work, but in practice, it still wouldn’t change much unless the structure of the Indaba itself changes.

Hosting Mining Indaba in a mining town without changing its purpose is just symbolism. It might look inclusive, but the benefits would still flow upward unless the event is redesigned around accountability and impact.

Right now, Mining Indaba isn’t for the ordinary miner and location alone won’t fix that.
