"He Dreamt Of His Own Death": Thousands Gather To Bid Final Farewell To Maskandi Star Scebi Dlamini

“My brother (Scebi) approached me in June and told me that he had dreamt of his own death.”

These were the heartbreaking words shared by Nduduzo Dlamini, the older brother of the late Maskandi music star Scebi Dlamini, widely known by his stage name Inkosiyagcokama.

Nduduzo was speaking to thousands of mourners who gathered at the Mzisho Stadium in Umsinga, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, on Saturday to pay their final respects.

He revealed that the family had tried everything possible to seek help and counter the premonition, but their efforts were ultimately in vain.

"We tried everything, but as you can see, our presence here today means it did not work out. I even saw online that he had shared the dream with one of his followers. Clearly, it was meant to be,” Nduduzo said.

The stadium was filled to capacity as fans, family members, high-profile celebrities, and prominent business figures came together to honor the fallen Isazochomelana hitmaker.

The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of last Saturday, claiming the lives of both Dlamini and his dancer, Gupta Mchunu.

Mchunu was laid to rest on Friday, while two other dancers from the group remain in hospital fighting for their lives.

The funeral service, which was originally scheduled to begin at 09:00 am, commenced at 11:00 am. Popular Ukhozi FM radio presenters Nkosinathi Mshengu and Mroza Buthelezi served as the master of ceremonies for the day.

In a deeply emotional letter read out by her sister Mbali, Scebi’s grieving wife, Luvuno, expressed her profound heartbreak and confusion over the sudden loss.

"'My love, my husband, my old man, father of my children, the sun has truly set for me. It set for me in broad daylight. You have truly left, father of my children I look at all your colleagues here and they are all present, I look around for you but I cannot see you. I am even afraid for you to rest in peace, not even knowing which world you are in. You have truly left, father of Bahle. You promised me that our love would never end, but now you have gone. You have left me alone with our children. What am I supposed to do now, knowing that I have no parents? You were my everything, and I do not know how I am going to live without you," she wrote.

Recognising the vulnerable position the family has been left in, prominent event organiser Xolani Mcineka made a solemn vow to the mourners.

He promised that organizers would continue to book Scebi’s brand for upcoming Maskandi events to ensure that performance proceeds continue to support his widow and children.

During the service, award-winning artists Khuzani Mpungose and Mdumazi Mhlongo were highly praised for the unwavering support they showed Scebi during the early stages of his music career.

Other notable dignitaries in attendance included the founder of the Mystery Foundation, Dumsani Nyathi, alongside the KZN MEC for Sports, Arts, and Culture, who both came to offer comfort to the Dlamini family.
