If you've ever heard us use the term Gulf Surge and don't know what it is, well hear is a good representation of one. It's essentially a shallow sea breeze from the Gulf of California, seen as a large boundary on radar that often brings breezes and an increase in moisture. #azwx
Satellite imagery shows the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) over the Caribbean. SAL is a significant influence on Atlantic tropical weather. The hot, dry air can suppress hurricane development, and trade winds can carry the dust to the Americas. Learn more at: https://t.co/N2AzBYjsR6
#DYK it can rain on the Sun? Plasma rain occurs when large globs of super-hot gas called plasma gather in the Sun’s outer atmosphere. When the globs of plasma become cooler and more dense than the rest of the Sun’s outer atmosphere, they drip back down on to the Sun like rain.
It’s all about perspective 👀
A solar prominence is a large, bright feature extending outward from the edge of the Sun.
Prominences are anchored to the Sun in the photosphere and extend into the Sun’s hot outer atmosphere, the corona.

Significant wind damage occurred in parts of the Valley last night (7/17). So far, winds were estimated at 80-100 mph in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Radar at the time indicated strong winds in the vicinity as well. #AZwx
A fairly substantial heat burst type event occurred with the strong winds around Sky Harbor earlier this evening. Temps rose almost ten degrees and the dew point fell nearly 20 degrees. #AZwx
[2:48pm]: This morning’s cold front has stalled, and the collision of air masses has resulted in the formation of several mesovortices. Despite a lack of clouds, this is visible on radar as the convergence lofts dust and insects into the air. #lubwx#txwx
#OnThisDay in 2004, hurricane #Catarina struck the southern coast of Brazil in the state of Santa Catarina.

It's #SUNday! 🌞
#DYK the Sun’s complexion changes? Occasionally, dark areas called sunspots freckle the face of the Sun. The areas are dark because they are cooler than other parts of the Sun’s surface & often precede solar flares. Learn more ⬇️ https://t.co/aRFWYL3LlL
