I like dating romantic, quirky women.
One evening, a few years ago, I was a month into dating someone, when she called me at 5 pm. Her shift was done and she wanted to come get me. Said she wanted to take me somewhere, show me something.
I was still running errands in CBD so she joined me. We held hands like kids, walking from shop to shop, grinning like kids, her in her work scrubs still.
It was about 7pm when we wrapped the last errand, and went to the restaurant, & this woman held me the entire time, arms around my torso, swaddled me completely. And we laughed. God, we laughed. It's like when we were together, the world stopped existing outside of us.
She had this very interesting habit of lingering before answering questions. She'd squint mischievously & giggle, like she was savouring, replaying the conversation in her mind before she nodded, and gave a rejoinder. I loved it. Got so enamored by this ritual that I could time, with exact precision, the moment she'd nod. I, too, nodded.
We laughed so much we did not notice we were the last ones in the restaurant, as was always the case, and only did so when the waitresses came to tell us they were locking up.
It was 10pm, & I thought that was it for the day because she had an early start in the morning. I figured whatever she wanted to show me could wait. But she tells me she is too tired to drive, so I drive her home. Plan was to get myself an Uber back to the pick up.
We get to her place at 11 pm. I am about to alight, kiss her goodbye, and leave when she tells me to wait. Leaps out of the car, up the stairs, and back in less than 10 minutes. Gets in, tells me to drive. I am thinking this woman is mad. Isn't she tired? It's 11:15 pm.
She puts on some Aretha Franklins et al. and off we go. We branch off the highway, she directs me through some strange road I have never been on, that gets bushier as we go. 30 minutes later, she tells me to stop by some isolated bush. No cars. No humans.
I'm thinking this woman is a serial killer. She wants to kill me. That or she is completely insane. She alights, asks me to follow her through a small thicket,I am worried shitless thinking someone or something will spring from the bush. Her? Completely unbothered. She stops, I stop behind her.
When my eyes adjust, I see the outline of a pond before us. Huge pond. Like a dam. And it was quiet. So quiet you could hear the fidgeting of leaves in the muffled night breeze. It was so beautiful, man.
She says that's her best spot, her secret spot. Says she comes there and just lays down. Says in daylight you can see swans swimming in pairs. They are beautiful.
She brought her head to my chest and I wrapped both arms around her and for a long time, we stood in silence. It was so quiet, man. Almost like we were the only two people on earth.
We left the place at about 12:30 am. We get back in the ride & the first thing she says is, "so not a serial killer, huh?" I never laughed so hard. So she too was afraid afterall.. but she trusted me anyway, as I trusted her.
I think about that night often. And I hope she is happy wherever she is. And I hope she never lost that childlike wonder. God knows we need it.
I need it.
🔥 “Answer the question, Tommy — I think you’re the one who needs to read the constitution, not me.”
@AbdulElSayed skillfully handles a bigoted Islamophobic heckler and exposes him as the true religious zealot in the room.
Ahannn, come on, GST. You guys shouldn't compromise your integrity for clickbait. The bill you cited is for registering and regulating NGOs in Nigeria. The section 15 you refer to applies for denying NGOs registration.
I dey rate una work. How on earth do you misinterpret a nonprofit law to mean banning scholarships.
All because most of your readers aren't lawyers who will crosscheck things doesn't mean you should cause hysteria, just for agenda sake
@Manuelix9 Our general culture of capitalism, consumerism, money worship, etc.
In my opinion, these are still manifestations of the original problem of poverty and percieved scarcity.
You wont get zero crime, but as you solve these issues (along with correct policing ofc) crime tends to 0
@Manuelix9 no serious person thinks you would get zero crime by providing social welfare.
there are other reasons for crime. Human greed for example exists irregardless of social status.
However, you can still make the argument that this greed can only thrive because of our general culture.
