1,001 ways to kill democracy:
A recent meeting of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chaired by Telecom Minister Mustafa Jabbar (Memo no: 14.32.0000.600.39.002.19.65, dated 12th January 2022, signed by the Minister himself) discussed ways through which the residents of Bangladesh can be brought under heightened surveillance and criticism of the @albd1971 regime can be quashed.
The meeting minutes say that the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), the state surveillance agency, can take control of any mobile phone that has a @banglalinkmela and @BdTeletalk SIM in it. While at it, NTMC can shut down the @facebook account of the user confirmed the Director General of NTMC Ziaul Ahsan, he also sought Jabbar and BTRC’s chairman’s intervention to come to the same arrangement with @Grameenphone and #Robi. How outrageous is this. I can understand Teletalk’s agreeing to be an accessory of oppression as it’s a state-owned operator. But why did Banglalink, which is owned by the Dutch multinational @VEONGroup and is led by a Norwegian national Erik Aas, agree to being an accessory to oppression by an autocratic regime?
NTMC has also called for shutting down all free VPN apps.
Minister Jabbar has ordered collection of personal information of those who work as Facebook fact-checkers and keeping them under surveillance. In Bangladesh, @Meta has partnered with @AFPFactCheck , Boom and FactCheck watch for fact-checking. What the BTRC would do with the personal information of these individuals is anybody’s guess. Here, I must mention @Qshishir1 , who is the Fact Check editor of @AFP in Bangladesh and he came up with that important investigative story of fake experts praising Bangladeshi government policies in national and international media.
At the meeting, DGFI Wing Commander Arifur Rahman sought the same reporting privileges for @X and @InstagramComms accounts as they currently enjoy for Facebook and @YouTube . Their work would become easier, he said. He also wanted to know if it would be possible to stop any live stream that criticises the state.
The meeting minutes also say that the BTRC chairman mentioned of “warm” relationship with Meta and they would like to establish the same relationship with @Google , which is looking likely after the BTRC seized some cache server of Google. The tech giant approached BTRC to ease the relationship. Is it because of the “warm” relationship that posts on Facebook — which is the social media of choice for Bangladeshis — criticising the government do not get as many eyeballs as it did before? Isn’t Meta acting as an accessory to this authoritarian regime?
This regime has made Bangladesh a surveillance state. If they are allowed to continue such repression without any accountability at all, they will gag the entire nation.
