34. bike. construction. beard that makes people think twice before they start talking to me.
buddy found this huge presa canario left somewhere. almost 100 lbs. asked if i could watch him a few days. i said sure. thought i was getting a real guard dog.
named him bruno. bed by the door. heavy collar. the whole tough guy setup.
first night 2am he starts shaking and crying cuz the ac kicked on.
by day 3 i realized it wasn’t just the ac. dude’s scared of the dark. scared of the floor if it’s slippery. scared of sudden noises. pretty much scared of everything except me.
day 5 i put a camo jacket on him. he just froze. neighbor comes over with this soft pastel sweater covered in little stars. he leans right into her. wore that thing for days. got mad when i took it off to wash it.
rescue calls later. they got someone who wants a “guard dog.”
i look over and bruno’s 100 lbs of him stretched across my couch using my arm as a pillow still in the sweater.
i just shook my head.
“he’s not a guard dog.”
“what do you mean?”
“he’s a presa canario that’s scared of the dark and needs to be tucked in every night.”
pause.
“so… he’s staying?”
“yeah. he’s staying.”
now he’s got his own spot on the couch and more sweaters than me.
