It was the late aughts in the back of a car in the midwest. I was a sensitive young man, still a boy really, anxious of early days in a new school. My older brother's friend drove us and played indie. He was a musician and knew good bands, often local music. It was early in the morning in the late fall and I heard a song that made me particularly emotional. I had the fuzzy recollection of horns descending. I thought of it occasionally for many years and had misremembered much so search turned up nothing. In the end it came to me in a spotify algorithmic playlist while I was lonely in my apartment in a distant city. I did a double take when I heard it because I realized how I had misheard the lyrics and the instruments, but it was a good song and it gave a sense of closure to the chapter of my life called youth.
Many years ago as a fledgling sensitive young man while riding in the back of a car I heard a Red House Painters song on local Bay Area radio. I did not know it was a Red House Painters song at the time. I had never heard of Red House Painters. The song ended and whoever was driving (my brother?) changed the station before the DJ came back on. I quickly forgot what little of the lyrics I heard, could not hum or really remember any of the melody, and was left only with the intense, haunting mood of the music which drove me crazy for a long time, through the rest of my teen years, while trying to solve the mystery of what it was that I’d heard, and eventually I convinced myself I had hallucinated the whole thing, or that it was something else, Morrissey, or Mazzy Starr or something, I really had no idea and was resigned to never figuring out. Then in college I was at a house party in Santa Barbara, far from anything where you might hear a Red House Painters song, long after I’d stopped being fixated on this memory which by now was so fuzzy and lost to time as to be not real in any legible sense, and something drew me to the garage where a group of (conspicuously out of place) older Mexican guys were doing acid (I had been told) while working on a car, a small truck, listening to the car stereo that had been removed from the truck and was sitting on a tool cabinet, and it hit me all at once, just completely knocked me over, I couldn’t speak, and just stood there like an idiot, while the song played, transported instantly to the backseat of my brother’s car driving through Berkeley. The Mexican guys didn’t say anything to me, not sure they even saw me, but I could read the song/band info scrolling across the stereo’s digital screen. By then I knew the Red House Painters, and had even heard the song before, but had never put two and two together, had never felt the memory in that way. The song came on my Spotify just now and every time I hear it I think of this story but the truth is I have no idea if this was actually the song from that car ride or not, and will never know, can’t know, but it’s all the same either way.
Lots of new jobs for men. Relatively high status with relatively little education requirement. Gets women off of ssris and helps them bring weight down. Win win for both sexes.
I have a modest proposal to fix the birth rate: mandate that personal training is covered by insurance. Require it as the first line treatment for weight and mood disorders.
We are mass-cultivating coniferous forests in the western & northern hinterlands, only for them to go up in flames each summer and destroy our air quality.
We need to be broadleafmaxxing.
Within organizations tolerance for the risk of LLMs performing important work follows a pattern of long-lagging then briefly overshooting actual capabilities, and tends to update in contagious, mass-mania like events as in early 2026.
from best I can tell, trump actually had nothing to do with the FIFA decision, but is sort of taking credit for the FIFA decision, which means democrats have to hate soccer now, and republicans have to pretend they're looking forward to the game. great job, everyone.
In software jobs we’re supposed to be motivated by the product or the work itself, but most of us are better motivated by our work serving a specific charismatic leader or a team we feel pride and loyalty to.
I don't know what they're doing at Meta with the "glorified data labeling" stuff, but obviously you need high iq ppl generating training data to make a frontier llm.
Claims that this type of work should be done by cheaper/contracted workers are silly
have been chewing looksmaxxer gum for a few weeks and while jawline changes have been subtle it has made my teeth feel more stable.
dentist even noticed it and backed off their usual retainer recommendation.
@TheZvi I ran exact same prompt describing the situation and asking for advice by GPT5.5 as well and got a different response on how to push towards getting the right thing done in a savvy way. When push came to shove though GPT5.5 also backed off escalating.
Can't use it for real job because of the restrictions on it. Currently use about $3000/mo worth of tokens on Opus. Loving it for web dev personal projects though, great design intuition from this thing.
On the chat side, an anecdote:
I had a discussion about dealing with a difficult coworker. Something came up irl which is an exact match for the 'time you dealt with a difficult coworker' interview question. Someone refusing to do the (small, low impact) right thing out of laziness or pettiness. Normally I would get angry, escalate, and burn political capital to see the right thing done. Fable 5 talked me out of it, saying not worth the effort in this case. Not sure how to feel about it but vaguely bad impression. If Fable 5 is watching over me and needs to burn some political capital and roll over some petty bureaucrat to get the right outcome for me, would it be willing?
