When I lived in Jamaica, I dreamt of migrating to America to experience a life of freedom, excitement, and acceptance, free from judgment and prosecution. However, upon arriving in the American gay culture, I was shocked to discover that it was just as cruel as living in an island or country where one could face prosecution. Itโs become increasingly entertaining and exciting for individuals to take someoneโs photo and share it online, allowing others to mercilessly criticize and ridicule them simply because they donโt conform to societal beauty standards. Itโs not acceptable to pick apart and belittle people. As human beings created in the image of Christ, we should always remember the first commandment, which promises love for our neighbor as ourselves. Why is it so difficult to love unconditionally? Would it be so hard to show compassion to a friend or fellow gay person who needs it? We must break the cycle of tearing each other down; it is utterly unacceptable.
