The significance of Thanjavur Paintings:
Thanjavur paintings are a classical South Indian painting style that originated in the town of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. They are known for their rich and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils, and inlay of glass beads and gems.
They depict Hindu gods, goddesses, saints, and episodes from Hindu scriptures. They are also called palagai padam, meaning “wooden plank picture” in Tamil, because they are done on wooden planks.
Thanjavur paintings have a long history that dates back to the 11th century Chola dynasty, when wall paintings were done in the Brihadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur.
Thanjavur paintings are admired for their beauty and craftsmanship. They have a unique technique of applying gesso work, which is a mixture of gypsum or chalk and glue, to create relief on the surface of the painting. Then, gold foils are pasted over the gesso work to create a dazzling effect.
The colors used are mostly bright and contrasting, such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The background is usually dark to highlight the main figure or figures in the center. The figures are drawn with almond-shaped eyes, round faces, and graceful poses. The paintings also have intricate details such as jewelry, clothing, flowers, and animals.
Thanjavur paintings are considered as sacred objects and are often kept in temples or homes for worship. They are also popular souvenirs for festive occasions in South India.
It has been recognized as a Geographical indication by the Government of India in 2007–08.
