I did a This or that? question at the beginning of class last year to build community. Using sentence starters helped students explain their reasoning. It built connections and translated into them defending their reasoning in academic discussions. I have compiled them to share.

jigsawed parts of the reading, and wrote a summary on one side and a model and/or drawing on the other. Then they shared out in small groups about their section. Reluctant learners were inspired because it was not paper or on a computer. Tactile learning to change it up!

When the time was up, we ran the pear deck and everyone used the guide to guess the amendment. In the end, they had to rank and justify the 5 most important amendments. Super fun and the kids loved it. Happy to share! https://t.co/EQxpWafuvo

Teaching amendments 11-27, I thought, how about they explain an amendment only using emojis! I created 17 blank slides with a @peardeck number engagement slide, and at the end of the deck I put the directions along with a Mini Guide @The_Mini_Page to the amendments.

I randomly paired and numbered students, then had them choose a number from a cup. Their group # was their slide #, but their amendment was random. They had 8 minutes to use @flaticon and explain their amendment only using emojis. No emojis with numbers in them.

Worked with @goMrWilliams to adapt @historysandoval’s American Democracy Playlist for 8th grade. Kids had fun with tactile learning using @Wipebooks. I added an audio file bell so students could ring it when they completed a task. I was nervous at first, but they respected it.😀
