Poland has been carrying water for Ukraine in ways most countries wouldn't dream of. They're footing the bill for Starlink terminals keeping the Ukrainian military online. In 2022, Poland took in something like six million Ukrainian refugees—opened their doors wide when the whole thing blew up. They've backed loans, pushed EU integration, and let weapons flow through their territory into Ukraine. That's not even the full list of what Warsaw has done. They’ve been one of the most reliable friends Kyiv has had.
So what’s the fight actually about? A handful of controversial, ultra-radical groups and their slogans—stuff that most ordinary Ukrainians either don’t care about or actively dislike. The UPA and OUN were never national heroes for all of Ukraine. They were heroes to a specific slice of the western regions, sure. Everywhere else? Not so much. Far from uniting the country, they’ve always divided it. That’s just reality. And yet here we are: on the eve of a big reconstruction conference in Gdańsk, with Poland’s support on the line, Zelenskyy is torching the relationship over fringe slogans and historical cosplay that most Ukrainians themselves don’t even buy into.
One has to ask—how do you manage to lose one of your strongest allies at the exact moment you need them most? It’s almost impressive in its stupidity. Common sense has left the building.
