Dr. Ross Harvey's latest article from the 30th Invest in African Mining Indaba confronts the paradox of mineral wealth and underdevelopment in Africa. While mining companies endeavour to uplift local communities, Harvey astutely observes the precarious reliance on mining codes, the strength of which is overly susceptible to political shifts. His incisive perspective advocates for a holistic solution – fortifying democracy itself, the bedrock for safeguarding property rights. As global demand for "critical" minerals escalates, Harvey contends that well-governed countries can break free from the commodity-export trap, emphasising the role of responsible mining in shaping a more prosperous African future: https://t.co/1vfYZaMIbc

Access to energy is a top priority in Zimbabwe's National Development Strategy (NDS1) for economic growth, aiming for an upper-middle-income society by 2030. However, the country faces significant electricity shortages and a rural-urban divide in access. To overcome these challenges, Zimbabwe can leverage its solar energy potential to "leapfrog" rural areas into a clean and sustainable energy future. Emphasising renewable energy sources will not only help achieve development goals but also mitigate long-term risks associated with coal investments.
