Alex Eala on why the Filipino community is so supportive, ‘I think we’re just really proud of where we come from. We’re a community that uplifts each other’ 🥹
“This is about the Filipino fan culture… we see some Filipino fans really outweigh fans from any other nationality by quite a lot. Is there something about Filipino culture that means this is sort of exacerbated? I think it’s beyond tennis. It’s in music, boxing, it’s in all fields.”
Alex: “I think we’re just really proud of where we come from. We have a really strong sense of community. You can see it when someone does well. We’re a community that uplifts each other. We’re quite positive people. When positive things happen to other Filipinos around the world we kind of share the enjoyment and share in the happiness. That’s how I see it.”
🇵🇭❤️
I see a post going around saying Treat Huey’s achievements for Philippine tennis have been overlooked as Alex Eala reaches more milestones. That Alex isn’t the first Filipino to reach a grand slam 3rd round because in fact Treat made it to 2 major doubles semis. So it’s not an invalid take.
BUT. While I admire Treat’s choice to represent the Philippines despite being born and bred American, Alex is a homegrown talent. Learned to play tennis in the Philippines, was coached by her grandfather, scouted by the Rafa Nadal Academy as a Manila-based player.
It’s so rare for someone born and raised in the Philippines to excel in world sports, let alone in the sport of tennis. This is the difference. This is why Alex has had such a huge impact. (Aside from singles being more popular than doubles.)
Big upset - HUGE - the reigning champion @iga_swiatek has just been hit off the Centre Court 7-6 , 6-2 by 21-yr-old @Filipino@AlexEala who crunched the ball with incredible power & dismantled Iga's game with relentless persistency. She never stopped attacking; never took a step back, dug out some amazing defensive returns & forced Iga into error. Wonderful tennis to watch & @Asia has a sporting star of real quality.
HISTORY KEEPS CALLING 🇵🇭✨
Alex Eala has written another chapter in Philippine sports history, toppling reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek to become the first Filipina to reach the Round of 16 at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
