Thanks to all who came along to our exhibition of local faces, Sùil an t-Solais, & thanks to @CommunityLandSc's Gaelic Communities Fund who supported the project. We were so pleased with how well it was received by both locals and visitors to Staffin! #communityevents#staffin
Tha Sùil an t-Solais, a bh’ann an Talla Stafainn a-nis seachad. Moran taing don h-uile duine a thadhail agus a thug taic dhan taisbeanadh againn. Taing air leth gu @CommunityLandSc: Maoin Coimhearsnachdan Gàidhlig, a thug taic airgead dhan phròiseact.

Cuibheall-shnìomha • Spinning-wheel
At one time Staffin residents would make a lot of their clothes from their own sheep's wool. It would need to be spun into yarn before using it, a task made easier when the spinning wheel became available.

Grèim an Diabhail is the name we use in Staffin for Devil's-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis).
It was said that the devil bit away at the root of this plant as he envied the medicinal benefits it gave to mankind.

Tha am fraoch fo bhlàth • The heather is in bloom.
At one time crofters in Skye would pull heather, twist it to make it into ropes and use it to hold down their hay stacks.

Obair an fheòir ann an Stafainn.
Haymaking in Staffin.
Haymaking takes place during a dry spell in the late summer, to make winter feed for livestock. A great deal of skill & optimal weather is required for it to be a success.

One of those special places: Staffin Museum on Skye. Dugie Ross started it as a teenager. Today it houses a charming collection of dinosaur tracks, fossil bones and shells & Highland historical artefacts.
A must-visit for anyone on the Scottish dinosaur trail!
