🔸This speech is interesting. Mark Carney speaks about great powers and middle powers. But there’s a group he says nothing about. There’s great, there’s middle but what is on the other end?

If as Africa we do not get our act together, for the umpteenth time in history, we will be eaten alive then come back with a pity bowl of grievances that cries about how it’s so unfair. The world is changing. Nobody is coming to rescue us. If we do not come up with an African story, an African plan and an African strategy, colonialism by a new name awaits.

Where are the leaders who are going to drive an African renaissance? Why do we hear nothing about a vision that will preserve African interests and take the Continent, its resources and its people, especially the young, into the future? Where are the brave men and women who will lift our rich continent out of its sordid poverty?

Are they waiting for a “free” new deal from China? A bankrolling of HIV meds from the US? More aid? More Africa conferences where we jump like children en masse to fit into the agendas of great and middle states alike? Are we waiting for them to coin us “third world” again so that we write academic think pieces about how the world is so unjust? Are we waiting to be squeezed into token posts at the UN then get ignored?

We can’t say nothing, do nothing and then when everything is said and done, complain that it is all western-sponsored? Where is our agency?

The AU is no longer fit for purpose. Current leaders are happy to be squashed into a bus in London or summoned like schoolboys to a white building in DC. It’s pathetic and uninspiring.

We urgently need new leaders.🇿🇼
