India tried to kill the Indus Waters Treaty. In what amounts to a major legal and diplomatic defeat for New Delhi, the Court of Arbitration has unanimously rejected India’s attempt to place the treaty in abeyance. The verdict is clear: India cannot simply walk away from the treaty, suspend it unilaterally or terminate it at will. The treaty remains fully in force. The court has also restrained India at the Ratle Hydroelectric Project, preventing critical construction above specified levels until and unless 90 days after the Neutral Expert delivers his final decision, expected in July 2027.

Another feather in Pakistan’s cap.
