The firm behind Wembley and Tottenham's stadium designed a football ground in Mexico, then pointed it at a mountain. They dropped the roof on one end so the open side frames the Cerro de la Silla, the saddle-shaped mountain that rises over Monterrey, sitting right behind the pitch.

That view in the clip came first. The architects, a firm called Populous, built the stadium around it, and they have said the mountain was one of the biggest reasons it looks the way it does. The roof stands tall on the north side and slopes down toward the south, opening up so the mountain fills the gap above the stands.

The roof is one solid piece that reaches 55 meters out over the crowd, longer than an Olympic pool, with nothing holding it up from underneath. It shades fans from a summer sun that climbs past 40°C, or 104°F. The sides stay open so the air keeps moving. Instead of closing the place up and running air conditioning, Populous cut "gills" into the metal shell, angled to catch the breeze and push warm air up and out. The building cools itself.

The metal shell is a nod to the city's past. Monterrey built its fortune on steel and had the first iron and steel foundry in Latin America, so the stadium is wrapped in steel and aluminum, which got it the nickname "El Gigante de Acero," the steel giant. The lopsided, sweeping shape comes from an odd place: the outline of old brewing stills, a tip of the hat to the beer-making the city has done since 1890.

Inside, they pulled the crowd right on top of the grass. The first row sits 9 meters from the field. At the club's old ground, it was 27. The stands tilt back at 34 degrees, one of the steepest angles in the Mexican league, packing all 53,500 seats close to the pitch, which is part of why it gets so loud.

FEMSA, the drinks giant that owns the club, paid for all of it. The bill came to around $200 million, making it the most expensive stadium ever built in Mexico when it opened in 2015. In 2024 it became the first stadium in Latin America to earn LEED Gold, a major green-building rating, for how it handles energy and water.

So the view in that clip was drawn into the plans years before they laid the first beam. The whole building is a frame, and the mountain is the picture.

In 1967, Margaret Heckler was elected to Congress. She was a practicing lawyer. She still couldn't get a line of credit in her own name. A sitting member of the United States Congress needed a male co-signer to borrow money.

She joined the Banking Committee specifically to fix this. She arranged meetings with CEOs at JP Morgan, Chase, and Wells Fargo. Their concern? Women might not pay their bills.

It took seven more years. Before the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed in 1974, a single woman needed her father or brother to co-sign loans even if she out-earned them. A married woman needed her husband's permission for a bank account, a credit card, or a mortgage. A widow with perfect payment history could be denied credit because her husband was dead.

That was 52 years ago. Your mother was probably already alive.

The timeline gets worse from there. Marital rape wasn't criminalized in all 50 states until 1993. Some states still treat it differently in sentencing. South Carolina requires married women to prove a threat of physical violence within 30 days of an assault before pursuing a case.

1974 feels like ancient history until you realize the country spent another 19 years debating whether a husband raping his wife was a crime.

Brittanie Cecil is the only fan fatality in NHL history.

On 16 March 2002, David and Jody Cecil took their thirteen-year-old daughter Brittanie to see the Columbus Blue Jackets play the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena.

The tickets were an early birthday present, she was turning fourteen in four days. They had good seats, fifteen rows up behind the goal.

About eight minutes into the second period, Blue Jackets forward Espen Knutsen took a shot that was deflected at the last moment by Calgary defenseman Derek Morris.

The puck sailed over the protective glass at roughly 100 miles per hour and struck Brittanie in the left temple, snapping her head back violently.

She got up and walked out of the arena under her own power, a coat pressed to her head. The game carried on. The Blue Jackets won. Fans went home happy.

At the hospital, a CT scan was performed but failed to detect that she had a torn vertebral artery.

She appeared to be recovering, she was still communicative, still holding the puck that had hit her while sitting in her hospital bed.

Everyone assumed it was a scare. A bad one, but a scare.

On 18 March 2002, Brittanie Cecil died at 5:15pm after developing a high fever and losing consciousness.

The torn artery had caused severe clotting and her brain had swollen.

She was the first and only fan fatality in 85 years of NHL history. The netting you now see hanging above the glass behind the goals at every hockey rink in the world exists because of Brittanie Cecil.

The player who took the original shot, Espen Knutsen, was never the same. His coach said the incident ended his career.

He retired three years later having played just 45 more games. He told reporters he thought about it all the time.
