Exactly one year ago today I had the incredible luck to get this @DeathbatsClub NFT as a gift from none other than @shadows_eth.
It was a way into a world that was completely new to me, the best Christmas present imaginable and it keeps on giving.
Thank you so much!
It's 2007.
I'm sat in an office , with about 25 colleagues.
It's cramped.
I'm still new in my job as an internal communications officer.
I don't know many people by name.
-------------
I've been asked to produce an in house magazine that helps keep staff informed.
The business is growing so quickly. They need to ensure everyone feels as though they are part of the plan.
So, i'm in this office, about to listen to a third party research agency inform the marketing and buying teams on recent, commissioned findings.
Specifically about consumer behaviour in the DIY sector.
I need to listen, write & take the work to my Director, who will ensure I haven't included anything too sensitive.
I'm still quite nervous about sharing my writing.
But the examples I'd provided at interview got me this gig. So I'm wide eyed and excited to give it a go.
The Head of Buying (Scott) just walked in and demanded to know who these people are and why he should be listening to them.
What a dick. He doesn't read emails - the last of a retiring breed, thankfully.
So now the Head of Marketing (Simon) is on his feet explaining/justifying to everyone the importance of understanding the customer better, before introducing the now very nervous third party.
I didn't know much about such research prior to this session.
I was so naïve about business and the work/processes that go into different departments.
I was 22, and had spent the last 6 years, chasing girls, partying and scraping through my studies.
Jeez, I wish I'd had a better, more experienced mentor during my late teens...
Over the next 90 minutes, a lightbulb flickered on in my head.
This memory is so vivid for me, because - it absolutely changed my perspective.
In those moments, I began to understand the importance of 360 degree customer/brand communication.
The importance of having a system the kept data in a format that could be explored to offer insight.
The importance of understanding how emerging tech trends would shape the future of what we build - and never to rest with what we have now.
I have never stopped being passionate about these things.
About the psychology of the customer.
The roadmap of the brand to meet expectation or, better still, delight and improve the customer experience.
I've dedicated the last 16 years of my professional career to making that happen in multiple sectors.
I've been successful because I never stopped listening and learning.
I specialise in brand development, community building, e-commerce and monetising at the intersection of business, tech and culture.
