South Africa has launched the first-ever human trial of a locally developed HIV vaccine led by African scientists, marking an important step in strengthening African research, knowledge, and innovation. The trial, launched in Cape Town at the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation based at Groote Schuur Hospital, is the first human HIV vaccine study with design and oversight primarily driven by African scientists.

For communities that have lived with and led the response to HIV for decades, this moment brings renewed hope grounded in research, rights, regional expertise, and the pursuit of health sovereignty across the continent.
