This is the logic you hear from Messi fans when that particular narrative favours them.

But watch what happens when the same logic is applied to Messi's playmaking.

The same fans will tell you Messi is a better creator than Kevin De Bruyne and the greatest creator football has ever seen.

Yet Messi doesn't even have the highest assist-to-game ratio among elite creators. Players like Di María, Özil, Kevin De Bruyne and Neymar have all recorded higher assist-per-game ratios.

So which one is it?

If goals-per-game is the ultimate way to determine who is the better goalscorer, then shouldn't assist-per-game be equally decisive when determining who is the better creator?

You can't selectively pick whichever metric makes your favourite player look better and then ignore it when the same standard works against him.

The GOAT debate can't be built around a different set of rules every time the numbers don't favour your narrative.
