I observed: I worked 50 hours a week, the guy next to me worked more, and my evaluation said "not enough".
I left for a place that said "40 and go home."

@bryanl My experience: there's no such thing as unlimited vacation. If there were, you could take the job and never work a day. Clearly they will fire you for that. The question is, what's OK? To answer that, you have to anxiously watch what others do.
An explicit number = no stress.
