SLFPA-W continues to monitor Tropical Depression Two. We are coordinating with federal, state and local partners as well as the Lafitte Area Independent Levee District on response activities. Though substantial tidal impacts are not anticipated for this event, we are prepared to assist in response efforts if necessary.

Levee maintenance goes beyond the levee itself.

Settlement can also affect the batture, the land between the levee and the river. In these photos, our heavy equipment crew is adding fill to a low section to improve drainage and keep the area accessible for routine maintenance.

It is one of the many ways our team works year-round to keep the flood protection system ready to perform when called upon.

Prepping for storms takes time and resources, which you may not always have. If you are preparing on a budget or on the fly, you can use these simple and helpful tips to protect yourself from a potential threat using everyday items that might be found around your home.

Last week our mowing crews completed mowing the levees in the English Turn area and we will be moving to the Donner Canal levee behind Holmes Blvd and on to the levees in Waggaman this week. Keep an eye out for our crews as you drive.

We recently enjoyed visits with the West Jefferson Civic Coalition and Westminster Park Civic Association, where we shared the latest on the work the West Bank Flood Protection Authority has done to prepare for the 2026 Hurricane Season and our continued efforts to keep the residents and businesses of the West Bank safe from river flooding and storm surge year-round.

Here’s the next tip in our hurricane season safety series. Throughout the season, we’re sharing important guidance from the National Weather Service to help West Bank residents and businesses stay prepared for any storms or threats that may come our way.

Keeping basic, useful supplies in your home year-round can help keep you prepared in case of a hurricane. Make sure your house is stocked with ample food and water, necessary prescriptions and documents and battery-powered appliances and chargers before a storm threatens.

In the case of extreme weather, emergency meeting places are essential to staying safe. Make sure that you have a clear-cut and communicated emergency meeting place, as well as backup plans if needed.
