KCB Group H1 2026 Earnings Analysis
Performance Summary:
KCB delivered an excellent H1 2026 performance with strong top-line growth, solid earnings growth, improved asset quality and strong balance sheet expansion.
Total Operating income grew by 9.5% to KES 108.09 billion. Profit after tax rose 14.5% to KES 36.07 billion supported by a 7% growth in net interest income to KES 74 billion and a strong 15.4% increase in non-interest income to KES 34.1 billion and lower loan loss provisions.
The cost-to-Income ratio improved to 44.4% in H1 2026 compared to 45.98% last year.
Shareholder Returns:
KCB Group enhanced shareholder returns with EPS increasing 14.5% to KES 22.45 per share. The board announced an interim dividend of KES 3 underscoring management's commitment to improving returns to shareholders. This represents a 50% increase in interim dividend compared to 2025.
Return on Equity softened slightly from 21.7% to 21.0% as shareholders’ funds grew at a faster rate of 16.3% outpacing the 14.5% profitability growth.
Balance sheet strength:
The Group's total assets increased 16.8% to KES 2.3 trillion. Net loans and advances grew 13.27% to KES 1.24 trillion while customer deposits rose 15.12% to KES 1.71 trillion. Shareholder funds grew 16.3% to KES 357 billion.
Government securities surged 31.5% to KES 401.3 billion pointing to a more conservative asset allocation strategy.
Loans to deposit ratio eased slightly to 78.8% from 79.5% indicating comfortable liquidity headroom.
Liquidity ratio improved to 49.9% indicating a strong funding and liquidity position.
Asset Quality:
This was one of the strongest aspects of the results:
Gross NPLs declined 7.8% to KES 203.8 billion.
The NPL ratio improved significantly from 18.7% to 15.1%.
Loan loss provisions fell sharply -13.6% to KES 10.8 billion, reflecting improving asset quality.
KCB Group is on track to reduce Gross NPLs below KES 200 billion. An NPL ratio under 15% would create comfortable headroom for more aggressive lending.
Our Valuation View:
We have raised our fair value estimate to KES 122.32 - 155.68, equivalent to 1.10x - 1.40x book value based on H1 2026 results. This represents a +40% upside from the current price of KES 87.25.
Book value stands at KES 111.20 per share. We expect KCB to trade above its book value supported by a consistent and generous dividend payout. The Management has committed to increasing its dividend payout to 50% and maintaining it at that level.
The combination of solid income growth, strong earnings, generous dividend payout, strong balance sheet expansion and improved asset quality support the higher valuation.

Suspect linked to stolen police rifle shot dead in Machakos
Police in Matungulu, Machakos County, have shot dead a suspect believed to be linked to the theft of an AK-47 rifle from an Administration Police officer in Mlolongo last year.
The suspect was killed on Friday night in the Masokani area, located between Koma and Kenol in Matungulu Sub-County. Police said the incident followed a confrontation with a group of suspects in the area.
According to officers, one of the suspects escaped after sustaining gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire. Police have since launched a search for him as efforts to establish his whereabouts continue.
Matungulu OCPD Peter Gichohi confirmed the incident and said the suspect who was killed had been on the police radar.
Officers had been following leads that linked him to the theft of the firearm.
The stolen AK-47 had been taken from an Administration Police officer in Mlolongo last year, prompting investigations and efforts to identify those involved.
After the Friday night confrontation, police recovered several items from the scene.
These included mobile phones, SIM cards, balaclavas and ropes. The items have been taken for further examination as investigators work to establish whether they can provide more information about the suspects and the activities they were involved in.
The body of the suspect was taken to the Kangundo Hospital mortuary, where it remains as investigations continue.
Police are also pursuing the suspect who escaped after being wounded during the confrontation.
Officers are expected to continue searching the surrounding areas as they seek to arrest him and establish the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
Residents who witnessed the incident said they were shocked by the sudden confrontation, which happened at night in the area.
Investigations are ongoing as police seek more information about the group and their possible connection to the stolen firearm.
