Since Eiichiro Oda began writing One Piece in 1997, he has dedicated 27 years to the series, taking just six breaks for health reasons:
- May 2013: Oda took a two-week break to recover from a peritonsillar abscess, caused by acute tonsillitis.
- January 2019: During an interview with Sanma Akashiya, Oda revealed that his doctor had identified early signs of gout and diabetes, attributing these issues to lack of exercise and poor blood circulation.
- 2020: Sanma Akashiya later learned of Oda’s high blood pressure and gave him a blood pressure monitor to help manage his condition.
- October 2020: JUMP issued an official announcement about a two-week hiatus for Oda due to a sudden illness.
- June 2023: After undergoing eye surgery, Oda took a four-week break to recover.
- November 2024: Oda is now on a two-week break to address his health.
Despite his intense workload and the physical toll of weekly deadlines, Oda has remarkably only taken these six health-related breaks in nearly three decades of writing One Piece.
