Benin Kingdom had fire brigade before anywhere else:

Someone asked if the Lagos fire brigade was the first in the country we now call Nigeria.

My answer is no. Based on factual historical evidence, the Benin kingdom was the first location in present day Nigeria to have its fire brigade stationed to prevent and quench fire.

Before colonial rule, Benin City was built mostly with wooden pillars, raffia mats and thatched roofs. Fire was a major danger.

The Oba therefore created a system to control fire. There was a palace guild responsible for palace maintenance and city order. They kept large earthen pots of water at strategic corners of the palace and in the Ogbe quarters. They also enforced building rules that houses must have spaces between them so fire would not jump easily, and cooking fires must be quenched at night. This was documented by early Portuguese visitors in the 1500s who wrote that Benin City was clean, broad and had order compared to many European cities at that time.

The Lagos fire brigade that people talk about came much later. It started in 1901 as Lagos Police Fire Brigade under the British colonial government. At that time it was a unit inside the police force, and its job was to fight both crime and fire in Lagos and nearby territories. It had a small hand pump and a horse drawn cart.

So while Lagos had the first colonial modern fire brigade station in 1901 which later became the Federal Fire Service we know today, Benin Kingdom had the first traditional indigenous system for preventing and quenching fire long before colonial rule, because of its advanced city planning.
