I am a General Category student, and I support reservation.
Every community deserves access to education, and representation should broadly reflect the population.
One reason many people oppose reservation is that they compare themselves with the total number of seats, even though reserved seats were never part of the pool they were competing for.
If there are 100 seats:
• 27 are reserved for OBC candidates
• 15 are reserved for SC candidates
• 7.5 are reserved for ST candidates
That leaves 50.5 seats open for General Category students. They should compete only for these 50.5 seats and never think about those 49.5, as they were never meant for General Category students.
If we don’t get selected, we shouldn’t count reserved seats as seats we “lost.” Our competition is for the seats open to us; the reserved seats were never meant to be part of our pool.
General Category cut-offs is higher because students from privileged backgrounds have historically had better access to education and resources.
Instead of looking at all 100 seats as “ours,” we should focus on the seats that are actually open to us and compete for them.
