And the mental illness argument doesn’t have merit when one considers that nearly all incarcerated individuals have some form of mental illness/substance abuse issue…a better solution might be to embed treatment centers within these facilities to correct the behavioral issues before releasing back into society. Yes it would lengthen sentences and yes, it would take enormous amounts of resources. But it is either that or do what El Salvador has done…
If you don’t incarcerate criminals, you’re essentially incentivizing more crime
When criminals face little to no consequences, more people join gangs because crime becomes low-risk and high-reward. Over time, this leads to cities being taken over by gangs and organized crime
El Salvador showed what happens when a country actually does the obvious: they arrested tens of thousands of gang members and watched their murder rate literally collapse. Today, children can safely go to school again
