First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio Champions Clean Cooking Solutions at Climate Resilience and Energy Dialogue.

In a powerful display of commitment to sustainable energy solutions, First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio addressed the Climate Resilience and Energy Dialogue (#CRET2024) held at the Freetown International Conference Center. Her remarks underscored the critical importance of clean cooking solutions, particularly for women and girls, as part of the government’s broader Energy Transition and Green Growth Plan.

Commending Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF), for his dedication to resolving the nation’s energy crisis, the First Lady emphasized the urgent need for innovative and sustainable energy practices. “Clean cooking solutions are not just an environmental issue; they are fundamentally about the health and well-being of our women and girls,” she stated, drawing attention to the dangers posed by traditional cooking methods, which disproportionately affect those in rural communities.

Dr. Fatima Bio highlighted the numerous benefits of clean cooking, which include improved health outcomes for women and girls, as well as positive impacts on environmental and wildlife protection. She called for increased investment from development partners in clean cooking initiatives, urging the government to foster an enabling environment for private sector involvement through supportive policies.

The dialogue also saw significant financial commitments to bolster clean cooking programs, including a $5 million pledge from the Global Electric Cooking Coalition (GeCCO) to the Ministry of Energy, and a €3 million commitment from the Government of Denmark for Decentralized Energy solutions as part of the Africa Power Sector Reform (APRA) programme.

Expressing her enthusiasm for collaboration with her husband’s government, First Lady Fatima Maada Bio reaffirmed her dedication to delivering sustainable, renewable, and affordable energy solutions for women and girls in Sierra Leone. “Together, we can turn the tide on energy challenges and ensure a brighter, healthier future for all,” she concluded.

As Sierra Leone moves forward in its quest for sustainable energy, Dr. Bio’s leadership and advocacy for clean cooking solutions stand as a beacon of hope and commitment to the nation’s progress.
