Nigeria’s opposition bet on unity ahead of the January 2027 election to unseat President Bola Tinubu is faltering, as @PeterObi and Rabiu Kwankwaso break away to join the newly formed, muted Nigeria Democratic Congress party @NigeriaNDCHQ.

The abrupt defection highlights the fragility of a high-stakes alliance unveiled only 10 days ago.

14 parties led by the @ADCNig had agreed to field a single candidate in the presidential election, aiming to consolidate the roughly 60% of votes split among leading contenders in 2023, in what analysts had billed as the most significant opposition realignment since the 2013 merger that brought the ruling APC to power.

That alliance now appears in disarray with the defection of the two heavyweights.
