Park boys basketball faced the No. 9 ranked team Fridley on Jan. 4 in a hard fought back and forth game, eventually resulting in a 90-87 win for the Orioles. Head coach Arsenio Richardson said this was a good win, but the team should not be satisfied yet.

French club is filled with French music and foods from croissants to European cookies. On Dec. 21, French club held a holiday celebration before winter break and many gathered for the last time until the new year.

In the face of warm weather and little snow, Park’s alpine ski team has started practicing as of last week. Even though the conditions are less than ideal, the team spirits are up and they are excited for the season.

On Dec. 12, Park’s band performed their first concert of the year at the middle school auditorium. The concert consisted of the Park jazz band, along with the 9th grade band. Each band performed four songs of their own.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), or seasonal depression, is a type of depression that occurs during the changing of seasons, especially during winter. Symptoms for SAD include oversleeping, appetite changes, weight gain and tiredness or low energy.

Park’s girls gymnastics team had a successful meet at home Dec. 12. It was the third meet of the season, but the first home meet so far. Park competed against Minneapolis South and took first place out of the two teams.

Park Singers is an auditioned group that takes on more challenging music. They meet outside of school for rehearsals and perform at a variety of locations throughout the school year. Park Singers sang holiday-themed songs at US bank plaza Dec. 11.

Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan, spoke to 10th grade students about her lived experience and upbringing as an Indigenous person on Dec. 13. Flannagan facilitated a discussion with English teacher Andrew Carlson’s Honors English students.

Most people have heard about the highly popular nicotine product called Zyn, a small nicotine pouch that's supposed to be used to quit vaping, but instead is just another source of nicotine addiction. They are now making their way into the school building.

In preparation for Park’s Chamber Orchestra’s first performance at the Shalom Home on Dec. 15, they are working hard to perfect their songs. This orchestra group only practices together twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, working on multiple songs.

Ever since the resignation of Park’s former superintendent, Astein Osei, students have been asking who would fill his shoes for the time being. Those questions were finally answered on Oct. 24 as Park hired a new interim superintendent Dr. Kate Maguire.

Every five years, Park’s IB (International Baccalaureate) program is evaluated to ensure the school is allowing students to reach their full potential within IB classes. This especially affects students taking or interested in the IB diploma.

Student Council has made changes to their structure this year after reflecting. These changes include being more involved in student events and promoting them more. Student council has grown since last year with major improvements to be a better group.
