It’s such an exciting honor to be (virtually) at #ASTC2024 to talk about the ways that we can make youth health education accessible, equitable, and stigma-free (in all kinds of settings!)
Data from @TrevorProject indicate that LGBTQ+ youth who are supported in their identities are at lower risk for attempted #suicide.
How can we support these youth when they visit a doctor? 👇 #SuicidePreventionWeek

@matildagosling Thanks for this! Our team just did a systematic review looking at UC’s of school health interventions: https://t.co/k4wEf483B8 we found that they were often poorly measured (if at all)
True story: At CNBC, in a prior career, I covered an upstart health plan that really believed that tech - specifically machine learning/AI - would be the core lever to drive behavioral change for its Medicare population. That would improve outcomes & drive down costs. The plan hired a whole data science/engineering team with that thesis and raised tens of millions from tech VCs.
I recall speaking to the employees some years later, many of whom were looking for alternative roles at software companies.
Can you guess what the most effective intervention was of everything they tried?
A nurse visit to the home. Nothing else compared.
Go figure.
@vdarcey This is really interesting! Not my area of research so hope you can help me understand; did you find that those with greater subjective hunger had “greater” (more enhanced) dopamine response to consuming the milkshake? Or do I have that backwards?
@addistgeb@DrNicoleC The sheer amount of time it cost me — hundreds of hours of my time that felt just so callously unvalued when family members/doctors/the prevailing discourse would say “oh and at no cost to you!”
@addistgeb@DrNicoleC For me, unexpected costs in addition to regular supplies were *several* lactation consultant visits (not covered by my insurance at the time - 165/hr), 2 pumps because the first I bought was horrible (first covered by insurance + $125), and a bf-ing pillow ($50). Not to mention
If you’re exhausted by that list, or you’ve never considered all that they do, or you’ve been profoundly impacted by one of my colleagues… thank a nurse this week 🥰
Happy Nurses Week! Here’s your friendly reminder that as you’re reading this, there are *countless* nurses on the clock around the globe who are: developing and coordinating complex care plans, providing thorough assessment to catch small problems before they become big ones, 🧵
teaching and supporting the next generation of nurses, executing dozens of medication, procedural, and direct care orders per shift, advocating to government organizations about insurance coverage inequities, and SO. MUCH. MORE.
It was so great to present my work on weight stigma among pediatric healthcare professionals at #SPN2024! Thanks to all who came to my talk and contributed to some great conversation. Feeling jazzed even after 4 hours of sleep due to a surprise double Taylor Swift album 🥰
Congratulations to Grace Haase! Grace will be starting her PhD in clinical psychology under the mentorship of Dr. Julia Hormes @HormesLab. We are so excited for her to start this next phase of her training and career! #eatingdisorderresearch
Minnesota State Sen. Glenn Gruenhagen (R) speaks against sex education in schools, saying it produces dopamine in small children and therefore causes addiction.
"You're producing addiction to pornography, and some of those young boys will turn into human sexual predators."
📖 New article with @arielbeccia @GwenFeeny @amandaraffoul and more great folks from @HarvardSTRIPED! We examined “wellness” supplement (immune-boosting, weight loss, energy-boosting, cleanse/detox) use among US nurses during the height of the pandemic. ⤵️

we can have good faith discussions about food systems and the ways that food systems may impact weight without positioning fat people as punishment for systematic issues.
even in a world where everyone has access to high quality, nutrient dense food, fat people will exist.
