Sports writer for 40 years, 36 at the Tribune. Covered it all but mostly the Jazz/NBA. Also college football/hoops, PCL baseball, horse racing. UNCo grad.
@KentuckyDerby Watch Justify’s stablemate, Restoring Hope, who did not belong here after running 12th in the Pat Day Mile. Quarter-horsed from the gate by Florent Geroux, runs blocker all the way around and quits in front of rallying horses on the turn. He ended up in $5K claimers in Chicago.
Down four, the Knicks fail to go 2-for-1 at the end of the first half. Miss their only shot. Spurs run down the clock and make a three. Seven-point deficit.
Is this a thing any more? Do coaches teach this? Do players understand it? Seems like such a simple strategy to grasp.
Terrific tribute to Wyoming sports writing legend Bob Hammond, my mentor and friend. It was an honor to talk a bit about a man who impacted my professional life as much as anyone.
"Best guy I've ever known." On the remarkable sportswriting career of @WY_Boomerang legend and @wyoathletics HOF inductee Bob Hammond, who died in December at the age of 80. #gowyo

Just learned long-time Laramie Boomerang sports editor, Wyoming Sports Hall of Famer and 14-time state Sportswriter of the Year Bob Hammond has died. I interned for Bob in 1976. He was a mentor, man of faith and true friend. My life wouldn’t have turned out this way without him.
@CollegeBSBNews Greatest upset in college baseball history still happened in 1974.
NCAA tournament. Second round. Northern Colorado sweeps No. 1 Arizona, which entered the best-of-three series with a record of 58-4.
Just as improbable, IMO, as the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
My good friend, @wesleyabc4, once drove into the middle of the Rodney King riots to reach the truck needed to file his story during the Jazz-Clippers playoff series in 1992.
Wes just announced he’s retiring from Channel 4. Congrats to a true pro on an exemplary career.
@Joshua_Newman Equally compelling question:
Houston had possession and could have had the last shot. Why did Clyde Drexler take a difficult shot that Karl Malone rebounded with enough time left for Utah to call time out, advance the ball to midcourt and get it to Stockton for the game-winner?
Hard to believe Utah Jazz great Mark Eaton passed away five years ago today.
One of the best people I have had the privilege to know. He won in life and on the basketball court. Honestly, I have never heard anybody say one bad word about Mark.
@DNVR_Avalanche “ … give them the best chance I can to win.”
“Them?”
That’s a red flag, symptomatic of major locker room issues. Tells you what you need to know about an overwhelming favorite that was swept.
@44MagnumBlue1 I will miss your posts about these young men. I’ll miss reading their names and investigating their stories and learning more about the battles in which they fought. I’ll miss the comments from those who knew/loved them.
You honored them all with your work.
Hold on.
Washington State was one of the schools that literally tried to kill the Mountain West Conference. But Wazzu was somehow allowed to play a MWC baseball schedule this season and is now representing the conference in the NCAA tournament?
This is some kind of stupid.
Hindsight is easy but …
Given Colorado’s injuries and lack of heart, man, did the Mammoth miss an opportunity in the first round vs. Vegas. I didn’t think there was any difference between the two teams in Games 1-5 and, now, Vegas is one step from playing for the Stanley Cup.
@pawluk_michael Memorial Day 1978: Saw Cox’s Ridge carry 130 pounds including jockey Eddie Maple and go from last to first to win the Met Mile. My dad and I were among the 42,000 at Belmont.
I think these are the days you are talking about.
