@NikkiGemmell Agree! Big mistake. She’s fantastic. And with Richard Glover going, why wouldn’t they want continuity rather than trying to bed down two newbies at once? It’s bonkers.
@NikkiGemmell@abcsydney terrible decision not to renew the contract of Sarah Macdonald. She is a brilliant presenter and has increased ratings in a competitive radio timeslot. Listeners are devastated and deserve an explanation and hope it is coming.
Today recipients of the Conserving Black Modernism grant program learned about how the values-based approach to conservation can help them understand their projects’ cultural heritage significance.
Lectures and exercises discussed assessing significance, heritage values, identifying vulnerabilities and constraints, and identifying stakeholders. In the afternoon, GCI’s Susan Macdonald led an interview and group discussion on “Living Memory” with Gail Kennard, Nakita Reed, and Charyl McAffee-Duncan, daughter of Black architect Charles McAfee.

This past week, participants in the International Course on the Conservation of Modern Heritage learned about the materials and construction techniques that became available to the building industry in the 20th century internationally and how they transformed the production of our built environment. Participants deepened their understanding of conservation issues and solutions for the conservation of historic concrete and were shown how to apply a sound methodology to the conservation of historic concrete.
The lessons included historic concrete case studies from France: the Camille de Hogue bridge; Eileen Gray’s Villa E1027; Auguste Perret’s Église Notre-Dame du Raincy and Palace of Iéna; and Le Corbusier’s Villa La Roche and Maisons Jaoul.
We are delighted to introduce the instructors participating this week in our International Course on the Conservation of Modern Heritage.

High in the Peruvian Andes sits the remote village of Kuñotambo and the 17th-century colonial Church of Santiago Apóstol. The church was built with thick adobe walls and adorned with wall paintings, but lack of maintenance, harsh environmental conditions, and previous earthquakes left it severely damaged.
For over a decade, we have been researching, designing, and implementing seismic retrofitting measures using traditional materials and local craftsmanship to conserve the church and restore its purpose. 1/
Last Friday, we were invited to visit the Peruvian Congress where we met with the President of Congress, Jose Williams Zapata.
"While meeting with the professionals from the Getty Conservation Institute, we talked about the importance of conserving art and culture. We will work together to strengthen our strategies for conservation and promote the care of our invaluable cultural heritage."

This past week, the International Course on the Conservation of Modern Heritage focused on environmental sustainability. The crisis of climate change necessitates that buildings and sites reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient. Participants learned about both the sustainable design strategies employed in modern architecture and the areas of weakness in modern design and construction relative to energy performance.
We also covered the decision-making process used to balance heritage conservation and energy upgrades to modern sites, and how to increase resilience in the face of climate change.
The lessons were complemented by relevant cases studies including a renovation of Louis Kahn’s Richards Medical Research Laboratories; a renovation and addition at José Luis Sert’s Boston University Law School Tower; the adaptive reuse of Aldo van Eyck’s Municipal Orphanage; and the Environmental Action Plan at the Sydney Opera House.
